Visitors to historic Kinneil House in Bo’ness are guaranteed a “Fair old time” this weekend.
The mansion – an early venue for the Bo’ness Fair – will be offering free tours on Sunday, June 26. Mementoes from the Children’s Fair Festival will also be on show inside.
The event has been organised by The Friends of Kinneil charity in association with Historic Environment Scotland. The House will be open from 1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, with the last admission at 3.30 p.m. Admission will be free of charge.
Maria Ford from the Friends said: “Kinneil House is a wonderful place to visit, boasting amazing renaissance wall paintings and a great history.
“That story included its role as an early venue for Bo’ness Fair.
“We’ll be displaying the dress of the 100th Fair Queen – Eilidh Thomson – inside the House on Sunday. We’ll also have the official fair robes, crown and sceptre on display. We hope it will attract lots of local people to visit.”
Sunday’s open event will run over the same weekend as this year’s Bo’ness Fair (taking place this Friday, June 24).
Maria said: “The town is always looking at its best at this time of year and it seems a great time to open the doors at Kinneil House. We also know lots of visitors come to the town for the Fair. Hopefully they’ll be around to visit Kinneil this Sunday too. As well as Kinneil House, Kinneil Museum will be open. We’ll also be selling refreshments in the museum.”

Bo’ness Children’s Fair is thought to be the biggest event of its type in Scotland. Modelled on Lanark’s Lanimer Day, it was launched in 1897 – and involves the coronation of a Fair Queen. The Children’s Fair grew out of earlier Miners’ celebrations in Bo’ness, which included visits to Kinneil House for whisky toddies, provided by the Duke of Hamilton’s Factor.
